Saw this today in the book:
The Everything Card Book
The suits represent:
Clubs - Agriculture
Diamonds - Merchants
Spades - Military
Hearts - Church
A couple of individual cards represent:
Queen of diamonds - Rachel, Joseph's mother
Queen of hearts - Judith (of the Apocrypha)
Until the French Revollution, King was the highest ranking card. After the French Revolution, Ace-high games became popular to show the people rising up over the monarchy.

That doesn't make sense to me. One would think by making the Ace the high card, you would be indicating the monarchy to be right choice.

No....prior to the revolution, the King was highest and the Ace lowest....
Ace had been the lowest in games
think monarchy - who ruled? The King and Queen.
so, then the Ace was made the highest to show the lowest rising up above the highest

Prior to the Revolutin aces were already establised as the low cards in card games....so, along comes the revolution, and the low card (the people) trumps the king

Ms. Woolite, since there was never anything higher in the land but the king, everything else had to be lower, so the ace would be like the number one at that time. When it changed, they "trumped" the king so to speak by taking the lowest of the low and making it higher than the king and spitting in the king's face. B)
