I have to tell you. My nephew's favorite team is the Yankees so my brother and nephew are going to Yankee Stadium over July 4 weekend and a client got them tickets for the weekend. So they get to see it before it's gone. Pretty cool, don't you think? smile.gif

A lot of people are going to be in tears when they tear that one down....

I went there many a time, rooting for the Orioles, all the while the Yankee fans telling me Clete Boyer was the better third baseman (because he was on the Yankees) while they were watching Brooks Robinson make catches that were impossible for anyone else.
unapecora
Yep, a lot of memories there that can never be replaced. I know why they do it but it always seems so much history is destroyed when they tear down old stadiums and put up new ones.

And what the heck have the Padres done to their uniforms? What's with the camo? Yeesh, they look absolutely ridiculous! rolleyes.gif
Daniel_12:10
That's so the other teams can't see the Padres' base runners!

(Still doesn't look as bad as when the White Sox wore shorts frusty.gif
I think that lasted about three games)

Re: Stadiums, oh yeah. There are people in Brooklyn who still haven't forgiven the dodgers for moving to :L.a., and thus Ebbets Field being torn down.

There's a guy, Lee Pete, who had or maybe still has a sports talk radio program. He had been a player and got injured and went into broadcasting. He ended every program with this:

QUOTE
Wrigley Field, Tiger Stadium, and Fenway Park, may they stand forever.

(Well, Tiger Stadium is gone cry7.gif, but great sentiment. Trivia, in the classic baseball movie 61*, Tiger stadium played Yankee Stadium!)

PS
One time a caller asked Lee Pete why hot dogs taste so good at the ballpark, and he said, "Because they never clean the grill!"

Kewl! Who do they play that weekend?

I hope to get up there this summer or possibly early fall so I can squeeze in one more game myself.

Last night during the Phiilies- Mets game they showed the new stadium the Mets will be in next year - Citi Park - and it's going to look like Ebbets Field, where the Brooklyn Dodgers played.
unapecora
Youp, the Red Sox! What a weekend that's going to be!

Oh cool, Daniel, Ebbets Field was awesome!
Daniel_12:10

Yeah, that's for sure.

I never made it to Ebbets Field but did get to see the Mets at the Polo Grounds where they played their first one or two seasons.

At the time the Yankees were pretty "staid and austere" and would take noisemakers away from people entering the stadium (like those New Years' Eve things that you crank).
So when the Mets came into existence - 1962 - just five years after O'Malley took the Dodgers to the West Coast - the NY press was calling the Mets fans "The New Breed" (meaning a new breed of NY fans after five years of only having the Yankees). That Mets original colors were blue and orange, the hat was an orange NY (the old NY Giants one, not the Yankee one) on a blue hat (Brooklyn Dodgers color, same as now, "Dodger" blue).
All this being the case, when you went to a Mets game as you entered the stadium, they gave you noisemakers if you didn't have any and told you to make some noise and root for the Mets!

Those games in those days were really a lot of fun - at the time the Mets first baseman was "Marvelous Marvin Thronberry" and had a reputation as being such a bad fielder that he got standing ovations if he caught a foul pop-up.

This was way before inter-league play and every year there was a Mayor's Trophy Game between the Mets and "that other NY team"
smile.gif

After the 1962 season (the Mets record was 62-100) Casey Stengel wrote the book:
Can Anyone Here Play This Game?

I remember seeing the Mets those two years! I actually saw the Mets win a game on a Throneberry HR that cleared the right field roof! I also remember Choo Choo Coleman at third. One time, he let a ball go through his legs, and he stayed bent down hed between his legs watching it roll into the outfield like a Little Leaguer! Too funny!
Daniel_12:10

Hey there, IA! I remember that....and I just sprayed my screen with coffee at "Win the game on a Throneberry home run..."
pound.gif :sneezle:

Meet the Mets
meet the Mets
bring your granny and greet the Mets.
bring your family
bring your wife
guaranteed to have the time of your life
Because the Mets are really hitting the ball.....

Mets commercial at the time....

After the 62-100 season, the unofficial version became
Beat the Mets
beat the Mets
bring your granny
and beat the Mets
because the Mets are really missing the ball...

IA, strictly a wild guess from memory

1962 NY Mets

Marv Throneberry
Choo Choo Coleman
Elio Chacon
Richie Ashburn
Frank Thomas
Roger Craig

Can't think of the others right now. I remember Ed Kranepool became the most popular player, but I think that was later on, after 1964 or so.

Writer, trivia for you, Marvelous Marvin Throneberry had a brother, Faye Throneberry, who played for the Yankees.
Daniel_12:10
Here you go guys, here's the logo on the first hat:

Not quite the same NY as the Yankees logo - this is the on the NY Giants used- the whole thing was pretty clever, really, as before the Mets came along the Dodger fans and Giant fans didn't get along too well.

Maybe it had happened somewhere else way back when, but I can't think of any other city that ever had three Major League teams at the same time.

Here are the lyrics to the Mets' Fight Song, per the world-recognized source for accurate information -- Wikipedia

1962 Version:

Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town.

Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they’re hollerin’ and cheerin’ and they’re jumpin’ in their seats,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are true to the orange and blue,
So hurry up and come on down -
‘cause we’ve got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!

Give ‘em a yell! Give ‘em a hand!
And let ‘em know you're rootin’ in the stands!
Come on and...

Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets,
Of New York town,
Of New York town.

I remember Roger Craig! I think he lost over 20 games that first season. The sad thing is, he really wasn't a bad pitcher! If I were to research his records, I'd bet I'd find he had a fairly respectable ERA. The Mets' "defense" and meager offense is what killed him.

That first year the Mets also had Gil Hodges and Hobie Landrith. Trivia tidbit for you: Landrith was the first pick made by the Mets in the expansion draft.

Sheepie, are they getting excited about their trip?

I r jealous....

Sheepie

I love hearing old people stories.

You do? OK, the first game my father took me to was Boston @ NY and I remember him pointing down to the players on the field and saying, "there's Jackie Jensen, Ted Williiams, and Mickey Mantle."

PS
Of course, when it comes to "old people", Dodger Stadium has nothing on a few of us in this thread. Ahem.
